If you didn’t have repair on your agenda for this weekend, you should. That’s because tomorrow, Saturday, October 15, 2022, is International Repair Day - an occasion to celebrate the act of repair and also call attention to the need to create the conditions for consumers to repair their own stuff.
This year’s theme is “Repair is Everywhere” (check out the short video below from the Open Repair Project). Use the Comments section to share your plans (or repairs) for International Repair Day.
If you’re stumped, here are some ideas for how to spend International Repair Day:
Fix something!
Fixing something that’s broken in your life and, therefore, keeping it out of our landfills is a great way to recognize International Repair Day. The Open Repair Project has ideas about how to fix your things, and keep them in use for longer here. There are also iFixit guides for fixing just about any electronic gadget you may own.
Join the repair community
As Open Repair Project notes, connecting with a local repairer or repair group is a great way to start building up your repair “muscle” and move away from our “use it up and throw it away” culture. There are repair directories in London, Vienna, Portland and Buenos Aires. If you’re in the EU, there are also directories for Restart Parties or Repair Cafes. In the U.S., check out the Fixit Clinic website to join the mailing list, find a Fixit Clinic near you or even start your own!
I look forward to hearing about your repair adventures this weekend! Happy International Repair Day!!
